And that was all. On the magistrate’s orders, the two bodies were going to be placed in a refrigerator at the mortuary.
The Southern Cross had just left on its way to the south, to Porquerolles, to the Petit Langoustier which had seen so many orgies.
Head down, Maigret walked around the buildings of the Café de la Marine. He pushed away a furious goose which came at him with its beak open in a hoarse cry of anger.
There was no lock on the stable door, just an ordinary wooden latch. And the gun-dog prowling round the yard, its paunch over-filled, rushed to meet every visitor, circling round them in joy.
Opening the door, the Chief-Inspector found himself face to face with the proprietor’s grey horse, which was as unattached as it had been on other days and which took the opportunity to go for a canter outside.
The broken-kneed mare was still lying sad-eyed in her stall.
Maigret pushed the straw with his foot, as if he hoped to find something which had escaped his notice on his first examination of the place.
Two or three times he muttered crossly to himself:
“As you were!”
He had almost made up his mind to go back to Meaux, even to Paris, and retrace step by step the route taken by the Southern Cross.
All sorts of odds and ends were lying around: old reins, pieces of harness, a candle-end, a broken pipe…
From a distance he saw something white sticking out of a pile of hay and he went over to it without much hope. The next moment he was holding an American sailor’s cap like Vladimir’s.
The material was covered with mud and dung, and twisted as if it had been pulled in all directions.
